Every reading

The index of what is here to practice. Torah readings: the fifty-four weekly portions in the order they are read, book by book, and the split portions used in Reform congregations. Haftarot: the passage from the Prophets that goes with each portion. Festivals: the readings for the days of Tishrei. Each opens in the trainer — the Hebrew with its te'amim, the recording, and the text following the chant word by word.

Festival readings

The Torah readings for the days of Tishrei: both days of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur morning and afternoon, the first days of Sukkot, Sh'mini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Text and trope; no recordings for these yet.

Reform (URJ) split portions

Reform congregations read three of the longer portions over two Shabbatot. These pages carry the half read each week; the aliyot and audio are the full portion's.

The haftarot

Listed by the portion each goes with, in the order they are read. Where the Sephardic passage differs, or a special Shabbat replaces the regular haftarah, the haftarah's own page says so.

Questions

How many Torah portions are there?

Fifty-four. The Torah is divided into 54 parshiyot so that it is read through once a year. Fifty-three are read on Shabbat; the last, V'Zot HaBerachah, is read on Simchat Torah, when the cycle ends and begins again with Bereshit.

Why are two portions sometimes read on one Shabbat?

A Hebrew year has 50 to 55 weeks, and some Shabbatot fall on festivals, which have readings of their own. In a year with too few ordinary Shabbatot for 54 portions, seven pairs can be read together — Vayakhel-Pekudei, Tazria-Metzora, Achrei Mot-Kedoshim, Behar-Bechukotai, Chukat-Balak, Matot-Masei and Nitzavim-Vayeilech. Each portion's page says when it is next read, alone or with its pair.

What is a haftarah?

A reading from the Prophets that follows the Torah reading on Shabbat and festival mornings, chosen for a connection to the portion — a word, a theme, an event. It is chanted to its own melody, different from the Torah's, though the marks on the words are the same. Every portion's haftarah is listed here beside it.

Which portion is read this week?

The reading picker at the top of every page shows this week's parashah and the weeks around it, and the home page opens on it. To find the portion for a particular date — a bar or bat mitzvah, a yahrzeit — use the date page.
